The aim of a Sufi dancer is to reach the source of all perfection or karma. This is done by abandoning one’s personal desires and ego. The movement of spinning one’s body in repetitive circles in the dance form, is symbolic of planets orbiting the sun. Traditionally, sufi dancers were only men, however more recently it has opened up to women.
